New Superior General for Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC)

Sr. Philomena Mathew has been elected the new Superior General of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC), the first indigenous women`s religious congregation in NorthEast India. Sr. Philomena was elected on January 28, 2012, during the General Chapter at the MSMHC Generalate, at Hatigaon - Guwahati. Sr. Philomena succeeds Sr. Mary Thadavanal who served in office for two consecutive terms.

3 Salesians and a boy injured in Shillong-Guwahati highway `head-on collision`

3 Salesians and a boy were seriously injured in a horrific road accident on January 23, 2012 on the Shillong - Guwahati Highway. The WagonR in which they were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with a truck. On impact, the car went up in flames though by that time the injured were pulled out of the car. They were taken to the GNRC hospital, Guwahati and are stated to be out of danger now. The injured are Frs. James Perunneparampil, Benny Alex, Principal of Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong, Fr. Joby Joseph, Vice Principal of St. Anthony`s College, Shillong and Sanroy, a first year B.Sc student of the college.

Deacon Michael Makri ordained Priest at Umden, Meghalaya

In the midst of thousands of faithful gathered at Mount Sinai Umden Parish, Deacon Michael Makri was ordained a priest forever by Most Rev. Dominic Jala SDB DD, Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese on January 15, 2012. He was accompanied to the altar by his mother, Martha Pul Makri and elder brother Anthony Makri. Concelebrating in the Priestly Ordination were 40 priests. Many religious both men and women too participated. Umden is situated in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, 72 kms from Shillong.

DBI, Guwahati Organizes National Tribal Youth Expo

The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur and Don Bosco Institute (DBI), Guwahati jointly organized a National Tribal Youth Expo and a National Conference for Youth Directors from 21st -23rd November, 2011. These two events ran in tandem in order to mark the international year of Youth and also to mark the 20th year of the foundation of DBYES.

University Launches New Degree Courses to Empower Northeast India Leaders

In an effort to offer higher education in socially relevant studies accessible in northeast India the Assam Don Bosco University launched 3 new Masters level courses as well as a post graduate diploma course. The new courses introduced this year include Master of Social Work (MSW), M. Tech. in Electronics and Communication (Opto-electronics and Optical Communication) and M. Tech. in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence).

University Launches Social and Scientific Research in 24 Areas of 8 Disciplines

GUWAHATI: The Assam Don Bosco University launched PhD (Doctoral) Programmes in 24 areas of research in 8 disciplines at a function held at its Azara Campus near Guwahati airport on 23 August 2011. The areas of current socially relevant study include Social Work and North-East India Studies, as well as scientific research in Physics, Chemical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Forensic Science and Computer Science.

Sohra Miracle Child is Baptised at Don Bosco Shrine

16 August, birthday of Don Bosco, Larisuk Khongsit has been baptised as Larisa Mary Khongsit. The baptism ceremony took place at the shrine of St. John Bosco, Cherrapunjee, where during the visit of the relic of Don Bosco, this bed-ridden girl had a miraculous healing after praying to Don Bosco. 23 young people and children from families that have been drawn to the faith through the healing of the 11 year old child also received baptism, at a ceremony presided over by His Grace Archbishop Dominic Jala SDB, of the archdiocese of Shillong.
